Grab this FULL WEEK short story unit on "The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs! Kids learn the 7 types of foreshadowing, hunt for clues while they read, and prove the ending was warned about all along.
This unit includes: a 5-day teacher plan with "Heads Up" notes, guided notes (concrete, abstract, prophecy, fallacy), a Types of Foreshadowing mini-lesson, vocabulary practice, and a Foreshadowing Clue Tracker.
The full story (adapted student version, public domain) with 142 numbered paragraphs, standards-aligned margin questions, and annotation boxes.
Project-Based Learning activity: the Symbol + Foreshadowing Flipbook, with build directions, a planning page, sentence starters, and a 100-point rubric.
Day 1: Learn the types of foreshadowing, practice with a mini mystery paragraph, and start reading Part One.
Day 2: Finish Part One and read Part Two. Keep the Clue Tracker going and make a prediction before the big reveal.
Day 3: Read Part Three (the knocking!) and complete the Plot + Foreshadowing Map with a partner.
Day 4: Analyze the Text (6 questions on evidence, structure, red herrings, and theme) and launch the flipbook.
Day 5: Flipbook work day! Flaps 1 to 3 are the symbol, flaps 4 to 6 are the foreshadowing.
