The Outsiders Full Novel UnitCreative, Standards-Based Novel Unit with multiple formative and summative options.  I use this exact novel study in my classroom every year.
$15
This Outsiders unit gives students a real choice in how they show what they know. By the end of three weeks of reading, discussing, and analyzing, students pick the final that fits them best — a hand-drawn One Pager that digs into motif, symbolism, theme, and conflict; a literary analysis essay built around the question "What is the value of being an individual?" with a claim, three body paragraphs, and an evidence tracker to help them get there; or a 30-question whole-book Quizlet that doubles as a Google Forms final.

The whole unit is scaffolded from day one. Students aren't just handed a final and told good luck — they spend three weeks building toward it through I Do / We Do / You Do activities, Post-it group work, Socratic Seminar, and daily wind-down work time on whichever final they've chosen. Every sentence stem, model answer, and writing frame is built in so students at every level have a way in.

Perfect for 6-12th grade ELA classrooms that want rigor without leaving anyone behind — and flexibility without losing the depth.
Why Teachers Love This:
Student Choice, Real Accountability: Students pick their final — One Pager, literary analysis essay, or 30-question Quizlet — but every option covers the same skills. No one gets an easy out, and no one gets left behind.

Actually Teaches the Writing, Not Just Assigns It: Every literary analysis skill has a sentence stem, a model answer, and a worked example built right in. Students aren't guessing what a strong motif statement or symbolism statement looks like — they've seen one, written one together, and then written their own before the final ever comes.

Three Weeks of Scaffolding Before the Final: The I Do / We Do / You Do structure means students spend the whole unit practicing the exact skills they'll need. By the time they sit down for their final, it isn't new — it's familiar.

Built for 6th-12th Grade ELA: The Socratic Seminar, the evidence tracker, the conflict and theme statements — everything is written in plain language, at the right level, without watering down the rigor.

Plug-and-Play Ready: Three-week lesson plan, answer keys with model answers, sentence stems, essay template, Socratic Seminar questions, and a reading calendar — it's all here and ready to go the first day you open the novel.

Flexible Where It Matters: Whether you're teaching the whole novel, using it for a sub day, or differentiating for different learners, the built-in supports and choice make this unit work in any 8th grade classroom.
